The Deep-Water Port That Decided the North African War In the vast, roadless desert, Tobruk's deep-water harbor was a priceless logistical asset. For the Allies, it meant supply ships could dock directly, bypassing 1,000 miles of vulnerable coastal road from Alexandria. For Rommel, capturing it would shorten his supply line from Tripoli by 600 miles. This single port became the strategic prize that could fuel or starve an entire desert army. Rommel's inability to capture Tobruk in 1941 forced him to rely on the long, vulnerable coastal road from Tripoli, constantly harassed by British air and naval forces.
