The art style of Final Fantasy 7, specifically the design of Cloud Strife is one of the most influential character designs in jrpgs. So much of what final fantasy would become visually has it's routes in Tetsuya Nomura's concept art for Cloud. Before that Final Fantasy had more of an airy painterly vibe to it's character designs; the use of bright colors contrasted by a white background gave the art an other worldly appeal. However, in Final Fantasy 7 there's a very clear shift away from that. The character designs are less phantastic and more grounded. The use of black and darker colors is overwhelming. Nomura's design with Cloud Strife and the rest of the cast would bleed over into the rest of the series as he continued to design for the franchise. Honestly today you could argue that Final Fantasy is what it is because of Nomura's influence (for better or for worse lol).
