The Moon orbits Earth in an oval-shaped path called an elliptical orbit, so it’s not always the same distance from us. Sometimes it’s closer (this is called perigee), and other times it’s farther away (apogee). A supermoon happens when the Moon is full and at its closest point to Earth, making it look bigger and brighter in the sky. A micro moon, on the other hand, is a full Moon at its farthest point, so it looks smaller and dimmer.

The reason the Moon’s distance changes is because both Earth and the Moon orbit around a shared center of gravity called the barycenter, which is not exactly at the center of Earth. This wobble in their movement, combined with the Moon’s elliptical orbit, creates these variations in distance. When a full Moon lines up with perigee or apogee, we get either a supermoon or a micro moon.
