Studying and scrutinizing this mysterious animal for over a year now is like being in a waking dream. I was astonished many times by new features that kept appearing on this giant marine cryptid, as I continued to zoom in and stabilize the footage. To the point I could barely believe what was I was seeing before my eyes!! Some made me laugh out loud, some made me get out of the chair and pace around until I could wrap my mind around it, and once in a while even made my eyes well up in pure joy! : )
The important thing through it all though, is that what I was seeing was undoubtedly there in the footage; a real living, breathing, splashing animal of enormous size, and truly swimming by the 3 astonished lads in their boats! The more I stabilized the footage, the more features appeared. They are unique features too, and of a more fantastical nature that can only place this animal in a category all on its own. Without a doubt, it's unlike any other large animal existing on Earth today, and undoubtedly a very rare life-form.
Shortly after working on this video, I began to research into what this animal could be, leading me into the favorite field of study - Cryptozoology (study of hidden animals) to see what historical sightings had been gathered from around the world of any cryptids similar to this mysterious visitor. Cryptids are animals not catalogued by modern scholars in the field of zoology, and are not proven to be real to the satisfaction of the pros.
My university background is in the fields of zoology, and in environmental biology, and earned a minor degree in both fields of study by completing 10 or more courses in each. My focus was on animal behavior, ecology and evolutionary biology (though I'm not sold on THE evolutionary theory).
Though I didn't realize it at the time, Cryptozoology was a childhood passion that has remained with me since first watching a giant squid from 20,000 leagues under in the late 60's, to reading up on Loch Ness, Yetis and Bigfoot in the early 70's ....and I continue to search the literature and YouTube for animals and entities abandoned by zoologists and 'science'.
From my humble position, many folks appear to have a misconception of science, and what is scientific, even within the the field of biology. Many think scientific validation of a species requires a physical specimen, or at least a physical sample from it. The growth of genetic research in recent decades has only strengthened that desire, in collecting genetic material.
However, physical specimens are not the only form of acceptable evidence in the realm of 'science' when it comes to species identification. There is also empirical evidence; a method used in scientific studies for gathering of information through direct observation or experimentation.
Photographs, video footage and sound recordings are all methods used to collect 'empirical evidence' for scientific purposes. Providing the evidence given is from a trustworthy and valid source, accounts from secondhand observations can also be considered as 'empirical evidence'.
Fortunately, there's a change is in the wind. Photographic evidence used for species identification is on the increase in recent decades. From deep sea jellyfish, squid & fish, to flies and primates. Steady improvements in digital photography are now making it possible to capture images suitable enough to distinguish some species without a physical specimen or sample.
Though this method of species identification is hotly contested in some concerned for misidentifying same species, subspecies, etc., there are cases when uniqueness of features is clearly evident in the photos and its designation as a new species is apparent to all. The non-invasive method of species ID through photographic evidence helps preserve any rare species identified, and also helps establish new species in the ocean depths too difficult to collect at the surface.
The excellent work by the YouTuber - ThinkerThunker, using photographic empirical evidence, has conclusively proven the existence of the non-human Bigfoot. His Proportional DNA theory - species specific differences exist in body proportion and appendage length between human beings and Bigfoot, clearly proves the existence of a cryptid using photographic evidence alone.
The video of this 'unknown' giant marine animal is absolutely empiracal evidence for its existence, and for a species designation. At the very least, this rare visitor deserves the honour to be raised out of the realm of being a cryptid and mythological, and be recognized as a genuine living animal we share the oceans with ....whatever IT may be?! : )
Part 3 in the series will be my first effort at narrating a more detailed study of this remarkable footage, and the mysterious animal it contains. I will share some of my thoughts and research on what it could be, and reasons why I call it a Dragon. A Latin name for it could be Aquadraconis crypticus, the Mysterious Sea Dragon!? : )
