Lebanon's efforts to rebuild its reputation as the gateway to the Middle East have prompted a spate of western investment in the area. One of the latest commercial ventures to open in Beirut is the restauraunt chain Henry J. Beans. The themed restaurant with a distinctly American feel has been opened by a group of Lebanese men. English-speaking staff have been flown in to train the local staff but the restaurant is managed by an American. The western staff members say they are excited to be working in a city once described as the "Paris of the East". The manager says "Beirut is the place to be in right now. It has endless opportunities and having suffered 17 years of civil war, the people are now willing to go out and do what they want." Mark, a staff trainer for the "My Kind of Town" group which owns the Beans chain, says Beirut was chosen because of its reputation as a gateway to lucrative Middle East markets.
