The organisms reproduce in two ways: Asexual Reproduction– In this process, only a single parent is involved and no gamete formation takes place. Sexual Reproduction– In this process, two parents are involved and gamete formation takes place. Meiosis is an important step in sexual reproduction.

Sexual reproduction is a complex process that involves the union of two gametes, or sex cells, from different parents to create a new organism:

Gametes: Reproductive cells that carry genetic information in chromosomes in their nucleus. In most species, the gametes differ in structure, or are anisogamous, and are contributed by different parents. For example, in animals, sperm are small and motile, while eggs contain food.
Fertilization: The fusion of the gametes, which can occur when sperm fertilizes an egg.

Zygote: The diploid zygote that results from the fusion of the gametes.
Organism: The zygote develops into an organism with two sets of chromosomes, and is genetically different from both parents. The offspring resemble their parents, but are not identical to them, due to the mixing of genetic information from each parent. This process leads to variety in the offspring
