Kaya kesimi, insanlık tarihinin en zor ve en emek isteyen işlerinden biridir. Antik çağlardan itibaren insanlar, taşları şekillendirmek için büyük bir çaba harcamış, zamanla bu iş bir sanata dönüşmüştür. Teknolojinin olmadığı dönemlerde, sadece basit el aletleriyle tonlarca ağırlıktaki kayalar kesilmiş, şekillendirilmiş ve yapı malzemesi olarak kullanılmıştır. Bu işlem sadece fiziksel güçle değil, aynı zamanda büyük bir bilgi, tecrübe ve dikkatle yapılabiliyordu. Her kayanın kendine özgü bir dokusu, bir damar yönü ve iç yapısı vardır. Usta taşçılar bu detayları gözle değerlendirerek, nereden vurulursa taşın nasıl kırılacağını önceden bilirdi.
Eskiden taş kesiminde çelik keski, murç, balyoz, levye gibi basit ama etkili aletler kullanılırdı. Taşa önce iz açılır, ardından belli aralıklarla darbeler uygulanır, taş yavaş yavaş çatlatılırdı. Bu işlem günlerce hatta haftalarca sürebilirdi. Özellikle taş ocaklarında çalışan ustalar, bu işi çocuk yaşta öğrenir, yıllar içinde ustalaşırlardı. Bu ustalık zamanla sadece taş kesmekle sınırlı kalmaz, aynı zamanda mezar odaları, tapınaklar, su kanalları ve daha birçok yapının oluşmasına öncülük ederdi.
Bugün çektiğim bu videoda, 20. yüzyıla ait eski bir kaya kesim alanında, yarım bırakılmış bir taşın üzerinde tekrar kesim yaparak, bu zor işin ne demek olduğunu göstermeye çalıştım. O kayanın üzerinde birkaç dakika çalışmak bile ne kadar büyük bir sabır ve güç gerektiğini ortaya koyuyor. Eskilerin bu işi nasıl yaptığına dair fikir edinmek isteyenler için bu deneyim oldukça öğretici oldu. Her vuruşta, tarihle temas kurmak gibiydi. The art of stone cutting is one of the oldest and most labor-intensive practices in human history. Since ancient times, people have put tremendous effort into shaping stone, and over the centuries, this craft has evolved into a true form of art. Long before the invention of modern technology, massive stones were cut and shaped using only simple hand tools. This process required not just physical strength but also deep knowledge, experience, and attention to detail. Every rock has its own texture, grain direction, and internal structure. Master stonemasons could analyze these features with their eyes and instinctively know where to strike for a clean break.
In the past, tools such as steel chisels, picks, hammers, and levers were used for cutting stone. First, a line was carved into the rock, then controlled strikes were made along that line to gradually create fractures. This process could take days or even weeks, depending on the size and hardness of the stone. Workers in ancient quarries typically began learning the craft at a young age and gained mastery over many years. Their skills were not limited to simply cutting stone—they also built tomb chambers, temples, aqueducts, and various other stone structures that have survived through the ages.
In the video I recorded today, I revisited a partially cut stone in an abandoned stone quarry dating back to the 20th century. I attempted to finish the cut using traditional methods to demonstrate just how demanding this work really is. Even spending a few minutes working on that rock revealed the immense patience and strength this task demands. With each strike, I felt as if I was connecting with history itself—because within these stones lie not just minerals, but also the sweat, effort, and silent stories of the past.
Stone cutting is not just about shaping a material; it's about understanding nature and working in harmony with it. When we consider the simplicity of the tools used, we can better appreciate how skillful and determined people in the past must have been. This video is not only a practical demonstration of stone cutting but also a tribute to the forgotten masters who dedicated their lives to this difficult yet beautiful craft.
