📣 ECES at the 20th Anniversary of the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation at the UN HQ in Geneva 📍🇺🇳

Last week, Filiberto Ceriani Sebregondi, Vice President of ECES and member of the Advisory Committee, speaking directly from the UN Headquarters in Geneva, reflected on the broader challenges currently facing democracy and electoral processes worldwide. He underlined that while elections remain at the core of democracy, they must be understood within a wider context marked by growing pressures on democratic systems.

📌 In this context, he highlighted key challenges such as the rise of autocratic tendencies, constitutional manipulation, international interference in elections, the spread of disinformation and misinformation, and decreasing funding for civil society organisations acting as watchdogs of electoral processes.
He also outlined how ECES contributes to strengthening election assistance by supporting electoral management bodies, civil society organisations, journalists working in difficult environments, and civic and voter education initiatives, while also engaging on the opportunities and risks linked to the use of artificial intelligence in electoral processes.
