Hello!

I work at a dinosaur theme park in New Jersey called Field Station: Dinosaurs. Normally, the park is open during the summer months with a very family-friendly environment that promotes learning through having fun, with the help of over 30 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. I'm proud to say that my title is "Dinosaur Technician", and it is my responsibility to maintain all the electronics and machinery, as well as scenic finishing to keep all the dinosaurs moving, looking, and sounding great. I'm sure I'll make a video someday about how they work.

This video, however, showcases a little project I worked on for our special Halloween presentation during Friday and Saturday nights, after normal open hours at the park. It's called "Dinosaurs After Dark", which takes our daytime learning programs and introduces the spooky elements of darkness to enhance the atmosphere. In this scenario, the Tyrannosaurus Rex has escaped from its compound and is now on the loose in the park, tearing up the power system and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. It is up to the guests to learn about problem-solving and the Scientific Method to track down where the T-Rex might have ended up.

I thought it would be fun if the guests actually experienced a dramatic "power outage" at the beginning of their expedition, so I made a pitch and a tiny mock-up that I brought to work and presented to management. To my delight, the project was approved, and I built this neat little effect that flickers the lights and plays electrical arcing noises through hidden speakers, but only when the motion sensor is tripped at the precise moment.

The effect went over very well and hopefully will be up and running next Fall of 2018. But in the meantime, there is lots of work to do on the actual dinosaurs themselves, such as improving their sounds and roars, fixing and upgrading their control boxes, and touching up their exterior surfaces to make them look like the mighty creatures they once were in prehistoric times.
