Will transitioning the world to 100% clean, renewable energy for all energy purposes improve your life? Yes. I’m Mark Jacobson, Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Stanford University to tell you why. First, transitioning means electrifying transportation, buildings, and industry and providing all electricity for everything with just wind, hydro, geothermal, and solar, which we call wind-water-solar, or WWS, sources. Such a transition will reduce annual energy costs to the world by 61 percent, from $17 trillion per year to $7 trillion per year in 2050. Why? Mostly because we need 54 percent less energy by electrifying and providing electricity with WWS. For example, an electric vehicle uses 75 percent less energy than a combustion vehicle. An electric heat pump uses 75 percent less energy than a combustion heater. Using WWS also eliminates the need to mine and process fuels, which consumes 11 percent of all energy worldwide. The rest of the reduction beyond 54% is due to the lower cost per unit energy of WWS versus fossils. Given that the upfront cost of a world transition is $60 trillion, the $10 trillion per year energy-cost savings means a payback time of 6 years. After that, energy is essentially free. Transitioning the world to WWS saves another $30 trillion per year in health costs and $30 trillion per year in climate costs, giving a total energy plus health plus climate cost savings of $70 trillion per year. This means an overall payback time of less than one year. Who wouldn’t do that? Why do we save $30 trillion per year in health costs? It’s because we eliminate over 7 million deaths and billions of illnesses due to air pollution each year worldwide. Climate cost savings are due to eliminating emissions from energy that cause climate damage. A transition also creates 25 million more long-term jobs than lost, uses less land, results in much less mining, and eliminate several types of energy insecurity that fossil fuels create. Lower costs, better health, better climate, more jobs, less land, less mining, more energy security. There is no downside to a transition to WWS.
