You’ve probably seen those videos on YouTube titled Top 10 Friends Mistakes That Were Left in the Show and usually one of the mistakes points out something something on the edge of the frame. Like a stand in for one of the cast, or the edge of a set being visible.
These weren’t mistakes in the original broadcasts it all comes down to aspect ratio. The series was originally shown in a 12:9 aspect ratio, or what is know as the ‘academy’ aspect ratio. This was because that’s how TVs were shaped back in the 90s and early 2000s.
Obviously, TVs are no longer this square, so tv shows are no longer shot in this aspect ratio, unless it’s for artistic purposes, I’m looking at you Wandavision.
However, Warner Bros television, the studio behind Friends, played a very smart move when they were filming the show. They were confident that the future of television wasn’t square, but widescreen. So they had been filming the entire series in the 16:9 aspect ratio. The prediction paid off and since 2009 16:9 has been the most common aspect ratio for televisions.
But this creates a problem for older tv shows, because they now looked boxed on the screen, with black bars on either side. If you’ve filmed your show in 12:9, the only thing you can really do to now fit the new aspect ratio is to cut off the top and the bottom of the frame to fit. Disney received a number of complaints after the launch of Disney+ because this is what they had done with the early Simpsons episode. Meaning that you missed out on a number of jokes due to the trimming around the edges.
But, if you’re forward planning like Warner Bros television. You get back into the archives, pull out the original film and digitise the whole 16:9 frame; remastering Friends in HD and the correct aspect ratio. If you watch a 16:9 version of friends and crop it back to its original aspect ratio, you’ll see that everything still fits into that boxier framing.
Unfortunately, this technique of remastering Friends was not without its draw backs, and this is where we get to the top 10 mistakes that were left in the show. Understandably, the directors and camera crew filming the show were really only concerned about that middle square. Remember, the first season of friends aired when mobile phones looked like this. So how the show would look when streaming on Netflix wasn’t really a priority.
So, this led to the occasional stand in or set edge appearing in some shots in the episodes we watch today. For me, the worst offender of this is this scene where chandler wakes up and then realises the hand on his chest doesn’t belong to him. Then the camera moves to reveal Janis. This joke is completely ruined by the 16:9 aspect ratio, because Janis is visible from the very beginning of the shot.
So, there we go, now you know why we’re seeing some many of these Friends mistakes popping up now. And the answer, is super nerdy, Thank you for watching. Feel free to subscribe for nothing but Friends content here on the original hugs channel. Thanks again for watching. Goodbye for now.
