License plate readers are used by police departments to help solve crimes from finding stolen cars to proving a suspect was nearby when a crime happens.

And a growing number of departments in Greater Cleveland are using a new system that is paying dividends.

To be clear, these are not speed cameras. They simply look at license plates for the things like stolen cars. Or, they can be sued by police to prove someone was in an area where a crime occurred.

They are cost effective with more cities getting them and some cities that already have programs are buying more.
