So earlier there was a misnomer that gender identity is a disorder, now it is only about gender dysphoria. Let me explain it in a better way. When a child is born we identify or give an identity whether the child is a boy or a girl which isn't biological or an assigned to sex and as they develop and there is some changes that secondary characteristics which physical characteristic which changes then there is an entity which is called as a gender dysphoria or a gender identity issues which might develop. That is there is a dysphoria or a differences where there is a strong sense of desire that to be treated as an opposite to whatever that has been assigned by the biological sex. Is it an abnormality or a disease? No, it is not. The cause is not known. Symptoms are that is it can be identified in a early childhood where due to in preferential foreign toys or games or an activities can be very different. They can feel a lot of discrimination in the schools like in a bullying or stress, stigma or difficulty in the relationship and these are the things which needs to be addressed. So treatment aspect is only for a dysphoric aspect to it by supporting their gender expression by various psychotherapy and also treating their underlying psychiatric disorders like having a discrimination, having a depression or an anxiety these could be addressed.
