How to Care for Pregnant Cows: A Complete Guide

In this video, we will discuss the care and management of pregnant cows, a topic of great importance for dairy farmers. Ensuring the health of cows and successful deliveries are vital for farm productivity. We will explore the essential steps farmers should take during pregnancy to maximize cow well-being and ensure healthy offspring.

Before Parturition

Isolate the cow to prevent any unwanted incidents.
Examine the shed for sharp objects and remove them.
Trim the cow's hooves regularly.
Maintain hygienic conditions by promptly cleaning cow dung and urine.
Consult a veterinarian for a balanced diet during different stages of pregnancy.
Follow the veterinarian's advice on providing the appropriate vitamins, minerals, and supplements.
Get regular check-ups from an experienced veterinarian.
Remain vigilant for signs of calving, such as swelling of the vulva and udder, thick mucus discharge from the vulva, and behavioral changes like restlessness or frequent urination.
If these symptoms are observed, move the cow to a clean and disinfected calving pen.
Check the udder for any calculi or lumps and consult a veterinarian if any issues are found.
Wash the teats and udder with slightly warm water before milking begins.
During Parturition

Leave the cow undisturbed and observe from a distance.
If there are delays or difficulties in delivery, seek immediate assistance from a veterinarian.
Typically, parturition is completed within 2 to 4 hours, but if complications arise, veterinary consultation may be required.
The calving pen should have a non-slip floor and adequate ventilation.
After Parturition

Thoroughly clean the floor area with disinfectants to prevent the attraction of flies.
Wash the tail and genitalia of the dam using a potassium permanganate solution.
Assist in cleaning the mucosa covering the calf's nostrils, face, hooves, and body.
Dispose of the placenta properly.
Encourage the calf to suckle colostrum, the first milk secreted after parturition.
Offer slightly warm water with molasses to the cow.
Ensure that the cow's nutrient requirements are met as it starts lactating.
