Located near Bangladesh’s highly disaster-prone coast, the village of Hothkali was systematically flooded last year due to an overflowing canal nearby, making its inhabitants' life miserable for months on end. That is until one woman, Minoti Rani, decided enough was enough. Rallying the other women of the village, she started what has become an inspiring example of local communities coming together to better prepare themselves against natural hazards.

This exhilarating story was documented as part of the TV show Amrai Pari ('Together we can do it'), which visits communities in Bangladesh’s most vulnerable areas as they work to build up their resilience in one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Funded partly by the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) and produced by BBC Media Action, the programme aims to both inform about these initiatives and inspire others by showcasing simple, low-cost solutions to everyday problems that can be easily replicated.
