03. 서도민요(산염불, 자진염불, 자진난봉가, 사설난봉가)
민요를 지역적으로 구분할 때 한반도 서북쪽의 평안도와 황해도, 함경도와 같은 이북지역 민요를 통칭하는 말이다.
지역별로 음악내용에 있어서 세부적 차이가 있다. 평안도 지역의 수심가, 긴아리, 자진아리, 황해도 지역의 산염불, 자진염불, 몽금포타령 등 통속민요들이 널리 알려져 있으며, 독특한 창법과 굵고 격하게 떠는 방법 등 특유의 시김새를 가진다. 남북 분단 이후 월남한 서도 출신 명창들에 의해 전승이 되었고, 제도교육과 무형문화재 제도에 의해 지금은 어렵지 않게 찾아볼 수 있는 소리들이 되었다.

03. Seodo Folk Songs
“Seodo Minyo” refers to the folk songs of the northwestern part of the Korean peninsula which includes the Pyeongan, Hwanghae, and Hamgyeong areas.
Each region has its particular characteristics. Popular songs like Susimga, Ginari, and Jajinari from the Pyeongan area, and San Yeombul, Jajin Yeombul, and Monggeumpo Taryeong from the Hwanghae area are widely known and they make unique ornamentation like deep vibratos. They have been passed down by master singers who moved down to the south after the Korean peninsula was partitioned, and are still available thanks to school education and the institution of intangible cultural properties.
