Global Village Media Theory, coined by Marshall McLuhan, is the concept that our world has turned into a single, smaller global community linking individuals worldwide through electronic communications, technology, television, and mass media. The way that we receive our news has evolved tremendously as network technologies have permanently enhanced mainstream mediums. Subsequently, the concept of global village has been realized through the vast network of communication systems that have made the world appear to be like a small village.

For Example, in the 2016 US presidential elections, candidates employed Facebook and Twitter to appeal to voters. Donald Trump utilized the features of social media platforms such as Facebook Live videos to address his supporters and share his thoughts through Twitter. Social media enabled Hilary Clinton to reach her followers all over the world, something that traditional mainstream media could not have achieved. The features of social media bring people from around the world closer instantaneously. Platforms such as WhatsApp links people with common interests and backgrounds together to share ideas and keep in touch from wherever they are.

Global Village Theory essentially posits that there is an inverse relationship between the geographical distance between villages and the time in which modern advances in media requires us to communicate. Currently, we live in a world where an event occurring thousands of miles away is conveyed in real time, and the world can view it as if it is happening just a few miles away. “The shot heard around the world” is no longer a hyperbole as awareness for emergencies and natural disasters now travels faster than the speed of sound. The Global Village phenomenon is the true embodiment of the cliché, “it’s a small world after all.”
