India is not officially moving to a 4-day work week — but the new Labour Codes have opened the door to something very close. Under draft rules pre-published by the Labour Ministry, employees and employers can now mutually agree to compress the 48-hour work week into four 12-hour days, instead of six 8-hour days.

The government says safeguards are in place: overtime pay at double wages, strict weekly caps, faster salary settlements, higher basic pay, and improved gratuity rules. Supporters call it flexibility and choice. Critics warn of burnout, coercion, and unequal power dynamics at the workplace.
