How Annually Winterizing a Sprayer Will Save You the Cost of a New Pump

If you live where it gets cold, it's real important to winterize your sprayer every year. The costly part of any sprayer is the pump, and if there's liquid in there that freezes, you're in for a costly repair and your local dealer gets some nice parts business.

In today's video, I enlist the services of my old buddy Mark, who is an expert on sprayers and chemicals. He's farmed for almost his entire life, so he has a lot of practical experience. He's also worked for a chemical distributor before I hired him at S & H Farm Supply at Rogersville, Missouri, and then he's had a successful career there and a lot of his business comes from sprayer and chemical sales there at the dealership where I used to work. He knows sprayers.

Mark led me through the winterizing process on a sprayer there on S & H's lot. The first step is to drain all of the material out of the system that you can, and you don't want to just open the tank plug and let it go in one place on the ground, it's best to spray it out so it's diluted in a big area. Then, put some water back in the system and flush again. Your owner's manual will guide you through the recommended process on your particular brand of sprayer.

Once the tank is flushed out, you want to dump some RV, or recreational vehicle, antifreeze in the tank, again, the owner's manual will tell you how much to put in. NEVER USE REGULAR ANTIFREEZE, it's hazardous to pets and livestock, and is not good for the environment when you spray it out the next time you need to use the sprayer.

Next, circulate the RV antifreeze through the system for a few minutes then spray some out the boom nozzles and through the handgun.

The whole process probably takes less than twenty minutes, including hooking the sprayer to the tractor, and it will insure that your pump doesn't freeze and break during the wintertime.

This is a practice that everyone who owns a sprayer needs to go through every fall, if you forget once, the cost of a new pump will help you remember to never miss again. Hopefully this video will keep you from experiencing that first pump replacement expense.
