Training Tip Tuesday! Start ‘em young!

I’m often asked how young one can start ground work with a horse. From imprinting at birth to all my ground work before getting on their back when they’re weanlings and yearlings, young horses have the capacity to safely learn how to trust and respect the human.

This doesn’t mean I will continue to do consistent daily ground work after I’ve taught them. Like the yearling I have in training now for a client, once they’ve learned my program, my opinion is that they spend most of the time until they’re ready to ride just being a horse.

That means being with other horses and continuing to live in their hierarchal society so they maintain healthy respect and manners around their peers.

When they do get handled over this time period, practicing good horsemanship is always a must, and they will be ready to go into training for riding well ahead of their peers who haven’t been taught to trust and respect the human.
