The Cold War, Metallica’s 1991 concert in Moscow, The fall of the USSR, anti-communism, the commodification of subversion, hair metal, and much more that is sure to harken "not that deep bro" from many. The genre and culture of heavy metal, something widely regarded for its inherent subversive character, found great success within the capitalist status quo in the mid to late 80's via the mainstream success of hair metal. What's more, this newfound market served a purpose beyond lining the pockets of the music industry: Anticommunism and the fall of the US's mortal enemy: the USSR.
