When you picture a light bulb, you’re likely thinking of an A-shape light bulb. It’s the most common and well-known bulb shape.

The code for these bulbs is made up of the letter “A” standing for Arbitrary and a number, which designates the diameter of the bulb in eighths of an inch. So, an A19 is 19 eighths of an inch in diameter, or 2.375”.


A19 is the most common A-shape bulb, however other popular options include A15, A20, A21 and A23. Since they do vary in size and output wattage, so it’s important to verify the lighting application requirements in order to choose the correct bulb.


A-shape bulbs are available in incandescent, halogen and LED technologies, however, incandescent versions are being phased out due to legislation.

While incandescent bulbs provide warm white light, LED bulbs offer the full spectrum of warm white to cool white options.


A-shape light bulbs produce soft-edged lighting. The light is not very precise and doesn’t create much shadowing - making them great for use in table lamps, wall sconces, ceiling fixtures and more.
