We begin by exploring exotoxins, secreted proteins produced by both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. You’ll learn how these potent toxins act on specific targets—such as inhibiting protein synthesis, increasing cyclic AMP, or disrupting nerve signaling—with examples including diphtheria toxin, botulinum toxin, cholera toxin, and tetanus toxin.

Next, we examine endotoxins, focusing on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)—specifically the lipid A component—found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. We cover how endotoxins trigger massive inflammatory responses, including fever, hypotension, and septic shock, through activation of TLR4 and cytokine release.
