Описание к видео HONG KONG: EXPENSIVE CHINESE WORKS AUCTIONED AT CHRISTIE'S

(3 Nov 1996) English/Nat

A dazzling and very expensive collection of Chinese works of art and jewellery went under the hammer at Christie's Auction House in Hong Kong on Sunday.

The Valuable paintings, jewellery and other works of art attracted strong interest from overseas buyers, particularly China on the first of the three-day auction.

The most expensive painting sold tripled its estimated price.

The bidding started at Christie's Auction House in Hong Kong on Sunday for the first of a three-day sale of Chinese paintings and ceramics.

Paintings, jewellery and other works of art went under the hammer after prices rose high for the valuable collection.

Three auctions of paintings were held, and one for ceramics.

The first sale consisted of modern and contemporary Chinese paintings, and it brought in almost two million U-S dollars.

Sales from the second round of bidding came to about three-quarters of a million U-S dollars from contemporary oil paintings.

The final paintings auction, featuring classical Chinese pieces, netted almost two million U-S dollars more in sales.

Christie's officials were pleased with the variety of bidders involved in the sale.

They said they had buyers from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the U-S, Europe and many new ones from mainland China.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well what is new for us is the interest from the mainland. Everyone has been telling us this is the new great El Dorado, the new gold mine for the future for buyers of Chinese art, and I think we have seen for the first time these sales a strong interest from the mainland. We are optimistic this will only get bigger and bigger, and of course the better the pieces are the more interest there is likely to be from the new generation of rich entrepreneurs from Shanghai and Beijing and Guangzhou.

The painting that earned the highest bid of the day was actually a calligraphy by Deng Wenyuan.

The final auction featured pieces from the Jingguantang Collection.

Some of the works dated back as far as 770 B-C.

The ceramics auction produced a total take of over two million U-S dollars.

Christie's officials said that the outcome was beyond their expectations.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
And it has been a strong day for paintings, particularly the classical paintings and some of the twentieth century paintings. The most expensive one tripled our estimate and to sell for a record price for painting of the kind. It has been a very strong buying from particularly overseas Chinese world and some interest as well from the mainland.
