What is Outdoor and Social?
We provide training events in an outdoor location tailored so that brands, experts and professionals can teach retail staff about products and acquire associated skills to improve their knowledge and competence when advising customers. Qualifying each person with accredited certification once the course is complete.

What we do
Since the year 2000 retail in the UK has faced some of its toughest challenges. Recessions, rising unemployment and, obviously, Coronavirus. These events mean that companies (brands) were forced to restructure to survive, letting staff go, and even then we lost business along the way.
This led to less sales and training reps on the road training staff in stores, delivering knowledge, confidence and inspiration.
Some industries would not be affected so much as the outdoor industry. Outdoor stores provide some products and services that can save your life or put your life in danger if not used correctly.
Being part of this industry, we have seen these events unfold, we have seen the consequences of them too. Now we are taking action to improve them.

Solution
Outdoor and Social was a three-day training event held at Newfold Farm in March. It was completely free of charge to all retail staff, with accommodation, food and drink provided, and aimed to help all retailers and their staff deliver better information to the consumer. Ultimately aiming to increase conversion in store by better informing the customer about the correct products and additional advice for their chosen activities.
and Social and the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) joined together to implement the first certification scheme for outdoor retail staff in the UK.
and Social working with the Institute of Outdoor Learning (IOL) made the first step in an educational path to guide specialism through specific modules covering outdoor categories.

What we are doing
We are constantly consulting with industry leaders and organisations, such as the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) and Running Industry Alliance (RIA), to understand any developments, changes, topics or activities that we should include in our plans. It is also important for us to be aware of how we can develop the current certification scheme towards possible NVQ or apprenticeship style professional qualification.
We are also surveying brands regarding their goals and training methods while, at the same time, speaking to retailers to understand their training needs and demands.
These conversations guide our certification, material and content that will be included as we keep up to date with the ever-changing outdoor sports markets.

Goal
Our aim as and Social is to improve the knowledge of outdoor and run retail store staff by delivering outstanding training while at the same time working with brands, professionals and experts to achieve their goals. Also, to qualify industry staff to be experts in their field and aid long-term retention of outdoor enthusiasts and professionals in our industry.

Statement
Our aim is to educate and unite outdoor professionals and provide them with opportunities to learn, develop and qualify new practical skills through experience in real environments, while being part of an inspirational, diverse and inclusive community.
