Susan Varcoe and Hannah Pagenkopf have collaborated for many years, right back to Hannah's childhood in fact, as they are mother and daughter! As Hannah’s first music instructor, Susan is thrilled to now be performing with her in a professional capacity throughout the last decade. The duo most recently have worked together putting on several successful recitals in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
This is their first time performing together for Mountain View Festival, but they have both enjoyed connection with the Festival for a number of years. Hannah has taken part in the Summer Festival three times, working intensively on art song performance with Rudolf Jansen and Brett Polegato. They are both delighted to be a part of the Isolation Point Concert Series.
Praised for the “special, silvery beauty and expressiveness” of her singing (Calgary Herald), soprano Hannah Pagenkopf has performed extensively in her hometown Calgary and abroad. She has been featured as a soloist and performer by Mountain View Festival, Luminous Voices, Cowtown Opera, Early Music Voices, the Calgary Bach Society, and the Pro Arts Society, among others. She has also appeared as a soloist with several orchestras including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, and baroque chamber orchestra Rosa Barocca. Most recently Hannah reached the finals of the NATS Artist Awards competition in New York City, placing 2nd and winning an additional prize for “Most Promising Singer”.
In addition to her solo performances, Hannah sings with the Christ Church Anglican choir and is the soprano section principal of the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus. She is also passionate about working with senior citizens, performing regularly at residences and programs for the Alzheimer Society of Calgary.
Susan Varcoe is a versatile and sought-after collaborative pianist, with a variety of specializations such as musical theatre, art song and jazz. Based in Calgary, Susan performs locally as well as internationally. She has worked with Calgary Opera, Cowtown Opera, Stage West dinner theatre, and the Banff Centre summer opera program, among others. The U of C vocal program, Mount Royal voice program and Ambrose University have all been a part of her work with singers.
Susan has recently returned to Canada from Mexico, where she was performing in various projects including acting as music director for several musicals, performing in jazz festivals, and accompanying silent movies.
