President Lee’s latest overseas trip is being seen as laying the groundwork for Korea–U.S.–Japan cooperation.

By steering clear of sensitive disputes while strengthening economic and security ties, President Lee demonstrated a clear path of pragmatic diplomacy.

The Korea–U.S. summit, regarded as President Lee Jae Myung’s biggest diplomatic test, concluded without major friction.

Just before the summit, President Trump’s unexpected remarks raised concerns of difficulties, but President Lee built mutual trust through praise and humor.

Concerns that President Lee might follow a “pro-China line” also appear to have been dispelled.

Breaking away from the old stance of “security with the U.S., economy with China,” Lee emphasized trilateral cooperation with the U.S. and Japan as the core axis of Korea’s diplomacy.

The absence of a joint statement was a shortcoming.

Still, the summit confirmed shared economic goals in areas such as shipbuilding, while avoiding any excessive “security demands” from the U.S.—outcomes seen as achievements.

There is also a possibility that President Trump could attend the APEC Summit in Gyeongju this October, raising prospects for renewed U.S.–North Korea talks.

Lee’s unusual decision to visit Japan first is also believed to have helped the Korea–U.S. talks.

By reviving “shuttle diplomacy” and reaffirming the spirit of the Kim Dae-jung–Obuchi Declaration in a joint press release, the two countries demonstrated their commitment to improving relations.
