Thinking on a Quiet Night 靜夜思 (jìng yè sī), by Lǐ Baí (李白)
床前明月光，
Chúang qián míng yuè guāng
Light from the bright moon lands in front of my bed
疑是地上霜。
Yí shì dì shàng shuāng.
It makes the ground look like frost
舉頭望明月，
Jŭ tóu wàng míng yuè,
I raise my head to look at the bright moon
低頭思故鄉。
Dī tóu sī gù xiāng.
Lowering it again, I think of my hometown.
Stork Tower, or 登鸛雀樓 （dēng guàn què lóu), by Wáng Zhīhuàn (王之渙)
白日依山盡，
Bái rì yī shān jìn,
The white sun drops behind the mountains
黃河入海流。
Huáng hé rù hǎi liú.
The Yellow River flows into the sea
欲窮千里目，
Yù qióng qiān lǐ mù,
If you want a view that stretches one thousand miles
更上一層樓。
gèng shàng yī céng lóu
Ascend to a higher level of the tower.
Dawn at Spring, or 春曉 (chūn xiǎo), by Mèng Hàorán (孟浩然).
春眠不覺曉，
chūn mián bù jué xiǎo，
I sleep in the spring, unaware of the dawn.
處處聞啼鳥。
chù chù wén tí niǎo,
I hear birds calling everywhere.
夜來風雨聲，
yè lái fēng yǔ shēng，
Last night, I could hear the sound of wind and rain.
花落知多少。
huā luò zhī duō shǎo。
I wonder how many flower petals have been knocked to the ground.
“Spring Scene,” or chūn wàng (春望).
國破山河在，
Guó pò shān hé zài,
The country is wrecked, but the mountains and rivers remain
城春草木深。
chéng chūn cǎo mù shēn.
It’s spring in the city and vegetation lies thick
感時花濺淚，
Gǎn shí huā jiàn lèi,
The time moves me; flowers bring me to tears
恨別鳥驚心。
hèn bié niǎo jīng xīn.
Separation pains me; a bird can make my heart jump
烽火連三月，
Fēng huǒ lián sān yuè,
The flames of war have raged for three straight months
家書抵萬金。
jiā shū dǐ wàn jīn.
A letter from home is worth a fortune
白頭搔更短，
Bái tóu sāo gèng duǎn,
My hair is now grey, and my scratching it has made it thinner
渾欲不勝簪。
Hún yù bù shèng zān.
Soon I won’t even be able to put a hair stick in it.
月下獨酌
Yuè Xià Dú Zhúo
Drinking Alone Under the Moon
花間一壺酒，
Huā jiān yī hú jiǔ,
I’m among the flowers, with a jug of wine.
獨酌無相親。
Dú zhuó wú xiāngqīn.
I drink alone, with no companions to share it with.
舉杯邀明月，
Jǔ bēi yāo míngyuè,
I raise my glass to invite the moon.
對影成三人。
Duì yǐng chéng sān rén.
With my shadow, there’s now three of us.
月既不解飲，
Yuè jì bù jiě yǐn,
The moon knows not of drinking
影徒隨我身。
Yǐng tú suí wǒ shēn.
And the shadow follows me in vain.
暫伴月將影，
Zàn bàn yuè jiāng yǐng,
I decide to just keep them with me for now
行樂須及春。
Xíng lè xū jí chūn.
Merriment is better experienced in spring
我歌月徘徊，
Wǒ gē yuè pái huái,
I sang, and the moon hangs around
我舞影零亂。
Wǒ wǔ yǐng líng luàn.
I dance, and my shadow makes wild movements
醒時同交歡，
Xǐng shí tóng jiāo huān,
When sober, we have fun together
醉後各分散。
Zuì hòu gè fēn sàn.
After I get drunk, we part
永結無情遊，
Yǒng jié wú qíng yóu,
I wish to forever be united with these emotionless friends
相期邈雲漢。
Xiāng qī miǎo yún hàn.
We’ll meet again in a distant galaxy
