Barnaby Rogerson’s recent book, House Divided, attempts to understand the origins of the Shia Sunni divide. Tracing back to the death of the Prophet Mohammed and up until contemporary times, Rogerson dives into how the rivalry between the Arabs, Persians and Turks has had a striking impact on the geopolitics of the Middle East/on the politics of the world. In conversation with Tim Mackintosh-Smith.

Barnaby Rogerson has authored a dozen books on North Africa and Early Islam over the past thirty-five years. His latest work is The House Divided: Sunni, Shia and the Making of the Middle East. He runs Eland Publishing with his partner Rose Baring, focusing on preserving classic travel literature.

Tim Mackintosh-Smith, historian and translator, was born in England but has lived in the Arab world for forty years. His books include a travel trilogy on the fourteenth-century wanderer Ibn Battutah, and a 3,000-year history, Arabs. He is a Senior Research Fellow of the New York University Library of Arabic Literature.
