(3 Dec 2014) The first of its kind in Latin America and featuring the second largest collection of malt whiskies in the world, according to its founder, the newly launched Museum of Whisky is causing a stir in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
The collection on display is a tour through the life and times of the much loved spirit, and includes 18-hundred different blends from around the world, from the best known to the rare.
The museum, that opened its doors two weeks ago, is the result of a lifetime's work for founder Miguel Reigosa.
For over 35 years, the man known as 'Mr. Whisky' has been putting the collection together, which is now second only to Edinburgh's Scotch Whisky experience.
"Really I feel very proud that here in this continent, where we are right at the bottom tip of the world, we have a whisky museum. It's a whisky museum that was created with a huge amount of love, thanks to the passion that was passed on to me from my father from the age of 14," said the 51-year-old Reigosa.
Set in Argentina, a country much better known for its love of wine, the museum is part of a global boom in the popularity of whisky.
From Mexico to Brazil, there has been an explosion in demand for whisky in recent years, and Reigosa wants to bring almost 40 years of whisky expertise to building on the appreciation for whisky.
His displays include some unique blends, including Republican and Democrat distillations to mark the 1984 elections in the United States.
The museum also offers tasting classes, giving aficionados and the keen enthusiast a chance to find their perfect tipple.
"I hold a special value for each and every one one of the bottles, but believe me I can remember the story of how I got each and every one of them. I look at them and I see my friends," said Reigosa.
A tour of the museum typically ends in one of the four 'shebeens' or drinking rooms, or at the well stocked bar.
Reigosa hopes to have a whisky-themed hotel built onto the museum by mid-2015.
