My name is Thomas Jefferson, born April 13, 1743. I am remembered as the author of the Declaration of Independence—the man who wrote that “all men are created equal.”
But that sentence would follow me like a shadow.
I believed deeply in liberty, reason, and self-rule. I helped found the United States, served as its third president, expanded the nation through the Louisiana Purchase, and envisioned America as a land of independent farmers and thinkers.
Yet I was also a slave owner.
I owned more than 600 enslaved people during my lifetime. I spoke against slavery as an institution—but I never freed most of those I owned. My wealth, comfort, and lifestyle depended on their labour.
One of the most painful truths is Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman I likely fathered children with. Though denied for generations, DNA evidence strongly supports this reality. I never publicly acknowledged those children. They lived enslaved while I preached freedom.

As president, I doubled America’s size—without constitutional clarity. I bent my own principles when power demanded it. I spoke of small government but used executive authority when convenient.

I feared strong central power—yet became its wielder.
I died deeply in debt, my estate sold, my enslaved workers auctioned after my death.
I helped give the world democracy—but failed to live fully by its promise.
History remembers me as both a visionary and a hypocrite.
Both are true.
