• Founded in 1853, shortly after the Haarlemmermeer (a large lake) was drained.
• Has a population of roughly 78,000 people.
• Home to the Haarlemmermeerse Bos, a large recreational area with forests, lakes, and walking and biking trails.

ℹ About the Geniedijk (Dike):

• A designated part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Stelling van Amsterdam."
• Built between 1888 and 1903.
• A 12-kilometer long green dike that runs through the entire Haarlemmermeer municipality.
• A special type of dike designed to function as a water defense line.
• Built by military engineers (genie) as part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a historical defensive ring of fortifications surrounding Amsterdam. By intentionally flooding the southern part of the Haarlemmermeer, the Dutch could create a barrier against potential attackers approaching Amsterdam from the south.
• Today, the Geniedijk has lost its military significance and serves primarily as a green corridor and recreational area for the community.
