1-11-26 International Sunday School Lesson – Repentance and Faith, Luke 15:11-24; Acts 2:38-39 by Dr. Ernest Polk.
This lesson has been taught/preached many ways. This is a parable, an earthly story with an heavenly meaning. The characters are the Father who is God, the Prodigal Son, who is the sinner, the Elder son who is the righteous that stay with God.
However, focus on the definition of Prodigal: to spend and waste money or resources extravagantly/wastefully. It is not that the son lost all his physical inheritance. He lost himself, who he was, and what he was. We all need to come back to ourselves. Fully knowing who we are in the salvation of God in Christ Jesus;
I Peter 2:9-10 READ
As prodigal sons and daughters We sin in rebellion in three ways: 1. We leave God traveling away to an empty place without God. 2. We squander what God has given us. We waste what God has blessed us to replenish, subdue and have dominion. 3. We lose our blessing with unsafe and unprotected excess living that exposes us the wages of sin which is death.
However God will heal the backslider and his call to the sinner from the fall of man to the second coming of Christ is to repent.

However, a hard head makes a soft behind. So God allows Satan to bring a famine in our lives. We spent all God gave us exposing us to the love of this world that loves itself. This reality and exposure to physical and spiritual famine/Limos – destitution scarcity, hunger causes us to want/Hustereo – feel and be inferior, deficient, fall short, lack, suffer need. However we do not turn to God. God allows this famine of want for us to come to ourselves to remember who we are as sons and daughters of God. As God spoke everything into existence, he requires us to speak into existence our confess with our mouths who we are, who God is, and who is our salvation to return to God.
1Jn_1:9 READ
3 things are confirmed when a sinner comes to himself:
1. We arise to go back to God and the old landmark
2. We confess with our mouth that we have sinned against the authority of the creator of Heaven and earth.
3. We humble ourselves not worthy to be called sons or daughters of God, but are now willing, ready, and able to be servants in the Kingdom of God.
So when we return does God, God does not scold us about our rebellion, and wasting of our blessing? No. As soon as we come to ourselves to return God runs to meet us before we get to him. He pulls us as close to him embracing us with the unconditional love that is needed as our father who art in heaven. In our confession, God clothes us in the robe of Christ salvation, the shoes prepared in the gospel of God’s salvation, and restoring us with authority of his ring as Joseph was given Pharaohs ring a typology of our resurrected savior Christ Jesus given authority by God the Father.

As the church, the body of Christ, we are the Elder brother and Elder Sisters in Christ Jesus. We must watch our attitude towards those who have backslid in their relationship with God and returned back home to the body. Many miss that when the younger prodigal son ask for his portion, the father divided unto THEM his living. Therefore the Elder brother that stayed with the father in the house of the Lord had what was his portion of the Kingdom, stayed in the Kingdom and lives in the Kingdom of God. We should rejoice that what was lost has been recovered to edify the body of Christ, and glorify God's creation.
