The Yunlong Rift, located at the foot of the Enshi Grand Canyon, Hubei, China, is a geological marvel with a history dating back at least 50 million years. It stretches for 3.6 kilometers with an average depth of 75 meters and a width of 15 meters. The rift features steep cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and a serene flowing river at its bottom.
The Yunlong Rift is famous for its unique geological composition. The layers of the rift consist mainly of limestone formed approximately 210 to 290 million years ago. The rift boasts seven to ten waterfalls, including those only appears during the rainy season.
The formation of the Yunlong Rift is a result of the Yunlong River flowing underground for millions of years before its collapse, caused by erosion and weathering processes. The collapse led to the emergence of the rift. The term "rift" refers to a narrow and deep gorge or watercourse, resembling a deep "crack" when viewed from above, as if the earth has split open. The Yunlong Rift represents a unique karst landform. Unlike typical rifts that are wider at the top and narrower at the bottom or vice versa, the Yunlong Rift is exceptionally rare with a consistent width throughout, forming a "U" shape in cross-section.
