Do this yourself! By it yourself—and then explaining it to someone else—you’ll remember it much more deeply and for a much longer time.

Materials Needed:
paperclip
small piece of tissue paper (the thinner, the better)
bowl or glass of water


Steps:

1. Cut a small piece of tissue paper, making sure it’s large enough to hold the paperclip.

2. Rest the paperclip gently on top of the tissue paper.

3. Carefully pick up the tissue paper (with the paperclip on top) and lower it onto the surface of the water.

4. The tissue will absorb water and sink, but the paperclip will remain floating on the surface.

The paperclip floats because of surface tension created by hydrogen bonds between water molecules.

Tip: Be gentle when lowering the tissue into the water. Avoid disturbing the surface, or the paperclip may sink.
