The general trend in recent decades is that the church has lost its place as the center of culture and society. Some of the reasons for this are fairly simple, while others are complex. It is an appropriate time to carefully reflect on whether or not the church has been faithful to its gospel mandate, and in what ways it should relate to the world with which it shares a common space. The Bible and church history is full of passages to guide us in this respect. Although it may be tempting to always chase after new trends, there are powerful reasons to reach back into the past and renew the values that we inherited from churches which have historically been rich and faithful practitioners of the Christian gospel.
