In this quick video, I explain how and why it’s necessary to install stucco rings for light fixtures before applying the stucco.
These outlets must be flush with finished stucco, or water will penetrate and sometimes cause electrical failures.
Mud or stucco rings are necessary for light fixtures; don’t underestimate their worth or value.

Are stucco rings necessary for attaching lights?
Absolutely, without these metal rings, or you can even think of them as gaskets, where you hang your lights or you will get water intrusion every time, causing short-circuiting or even worse.
I won’t go there, but worse is not good, so ensure your metal rings are correctly installed.

If there are no stucco rings, you can and will get water intrusion, as you must mount your light to these rigs, not the wall.
Not only would it be foolish to attach your exterior light fixtures to the wall, but the new stucco is one inch thick, so it would bury the light fixture base.

Tip: They sell stucco or plaster rings at all hardware stores; if you buy the half-inch thick ones, place them over the stucco netting to bring them to the 7/8 necessary.
Or buy the 7/8 stucco rings or 1 inch and place them over the membrane.
Don’t forget to seal them to your membrane with a quality polyurethane caulking adhesive sealant, such as Sikaflex.

Here's a question I do get asked often, what about electrical boxes? Electrical boxes should be set at least 7/8 of an inch past the plywood surface, then when your lath is complete, you fuse the paper to the box with any polyurethane caulking.
Just like we fused this ring to the paper, thus no water infiltration.
