The Enso has been selected as the image for the May 2016 Festival of Faiths, Sacred Wisdom: Pathways to Nonviolence, because the circle is both a representation of a great void and expresses the totality of our being and our wholeness as a human race. The circle is complete, perfect and whole, yet at the same time remains mysterious, indefinable and haunting.

The Enso is one of the most familiar symbols in Zen calligraphy and is considered to be an expression of a moment as it is. The circle has been used for centuries to illustrate profound spiritual principles as well as serving as meditative movement expressing the mind of the artist that brushes it. It is said the character of the artist is fully exposed in how she or he draws an Enso. Some artists practice drawing one daily as a spiritual exercise.
