On our second day exploring Calgary and nearby areas, we visited the beautiful Town of Okotoks, Alberta — and it was our very first time here! Just 38 km south of Downtown Calgary, Okotoks sits along the scenic Sheep River and is known as a peaceful bedroom community of Calgary. We instantly fell in love with the town’s quiet charm and natural beauty. 🏞️✨

🪨 A Bit of History: The Story Behind Okotoks

The name “Okotoks” comes from the Blackfoot word “Okatok,” which means “rock”—a reference to the famous Big Rock, a glacial erratic used by Indigenous peoples as a navigation marker. This area has a rich history with First Nations, including the Blackfoot, Sarcee (Tsuu T’ina), and Stoney peoples, each with their own name for the valley.

🚶‍♂️ Early Settlers and Development

The first European settlers arrived in the 1880s, like Kenneth Cameron and Alexander McRae, who established stopping houses and helped build early community crossings over Sheep Creek. Okotoks was briefly known as Dewdney in the 1890s but officially became a town on June 1, 1904.

📍 Fun Fact: The Cameron Crossing, near today’s library walking bridge, is believed to be one of the earliest river crossings in town!
