In 2017, astronomers detected the first known interstellar object: Oumuamua. It was fast, strange, and gone before we had time to study it properly. Then in 2019 came 2I/Borisov, a comet-like object from beyond the solar system, confirming that such visitors aren’t once-in-a-lifetime events. Now, in 2025, astronomers have detected a third: a newly discovered object named A11pI3Z. And this time, we saw it coming.

Listed on July 1st by the Minor Planet Center, A11pI3Z immediately stood out due to its sharply hyperbolic orbit. It isn’t gravitationally bound to the Sun, with an eccentricity of about 6 and a speed of roughly 66 kilometers per second, well above the escape velocity of our solar system. Archival images extended the observation arc back to June 25th, helping astronomers refine the orbit and confirm what many suspected. The object is now officially catalogued as 3I/ATLAS, making it the third confirmed interstellar visitor ever recorded.

A11pI3Z will reach its closest point to the Sun on October 27, 2025, at about 1.4 AU. Earth will be on the far side of its orbit at that time, but the object will make its closest approach to Earth on December 17, at a distance of 2.4 AU. Observations so far show a visual magnitude of around 18.8. Based on its brightness and assumed reflectivity, its size is estimated at about 20 kilometers, though this may change with more data. Some reports have hinted at possible cometary activity, but nothing has been confirmed.

Its retrograde orbit and steep inclination suggest that A11pI3Z likely originated from the Milky Way’s stellar disk. If astronomers can determine its exact incoming velocity and direction, we may be able to trace it back to its point of origin. With limited time before it exits the solar system, telescopes around the world and in space are now focused on learning as much as possible. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, now operational, is expected to play a major role in detecting more such objects in the years to come. Its first image has already been released, and it has detected several new asteroids, including some near-Earth ones.
