Algae can be a real problen in some aquariums. In this video I show some of the fish and invertebrates that I use to combat problematic algae growth in the marine aquarium. Algae uses phosphates and nitrates as nutrition to grow. It is very important to keep these parameters in check within your aquarium so you do not have an algae bloom. Corals also use these nutrients for growth so I do not recommend keeping nitrates and phosphates at zero. I try to keep my nitrates around 5 p.p.m. and my phosphates around 0.02. That can be easier said than done though. If you have these nutrients in your aquarium, combined with your aquarium lighting, then you will at some point ecounter some algae. No aquarium has zero algae, it is just controlled. I like to use marine fish and invertebrates to help keep algae in check. There are chemicals that you can buy to control algae growth but I like to use natural remedies whenever possible. The fish and inverts that I show in this video are natural predators of algae and feed on it as a regular part of their diets. The algae grows in the aquarium using up excess nitrates and phosphates and then the fish and inverts eat the algae for nutrition. It is all part of a living breathing echo system, that if kept properly maintains a homeostasis environment within your aquarium.
