Girish Chandra Ghosh, the father of the modern Bengali stage, apparently led a bohemian lifestyle. An atheist and a rebel, Girish Chandra Ghosh was the greatest dramatist of his time. He owned a theater company in Calcutta , the 'National Theater' and was also renowned as a poet, a playwright, an actor and a trainer. He created classical based music for the plays.

Girish Chandra Ghosh, was born on the 28th February, 1844, as the eighth child of the family. As the beliefs in a Bengali family, of the eighth child being lucky, Girish Chandra Ghosh could not match up to it. His mother was taken ill right after his birth, putting him under the supervision of a low caste maidservant of the family. Thereafter, Girish missed his mother's compassion, but was rewarded with a love for literature from her and a paradigmatic mind from his father. He gained a vast knowledge on English literature, western philosophy and science. In his youth he stepped the threshold of an irregular lifestyle. Girish Ghosh's middle life was also not sans tragedy, as he has to face the death of his wife and daughters.
The tragedies in his personal life and his radical attitude made him an atheist. He did not believe in the existence of God and neither he had faith in super natural powers, until he met Sri Ramakrishna Dev. It was for his love, support and help that Girish Ghosh was completely a changed man, who left alcohol and became a firm believer in God.
