The African Olive Pigeon (Columba arquatrix), known by many South Africans as the Rameron Pigeon, is a shy and seldom-seen bird.

This large pigeon prefers dense cover and high perches, and rarely comes to the ground. It is usually heard before it is seen.

This POV video shows both a male and a female drinking at a small birdbath in Marais Steyn Park, Dowerglen, Edenvale.

They would visit the garden almost daily between 3pm and 4pm, making them one of the most exciting and regular birds seen at this residence I called home for around 18 months.

Garden Birding is an important part of understanding South African bird diversity, and sightings like this show just how special suburban birding can be.

This video forms part of the Garden Birding playlist, where I share backyard birds filmed in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the rest of South Africa.

We have recorded the primary bird call of the African Olive Pigeon, and placed it as the audio in this video to add an extra "wild" element to the visuals. It was not used as a playback to call the bird to the area. This call is quite similar to that of the Red-eyed Dove.
