TRAIL RUNNING THE TONTO TRAIL - GRAND CANYON

For many years I've wanted to get down into the canyon, but I didn't know if I had what it takes to do a Rim to Rim to Rim for my first experience. Then I watched a film by Jeff Pelletier which offered a unique alternate route with slightly less miles and vertical gain. I knew this was what I wanted to do, so in late April of 2024 I set out with my friend Cristal to test our spring fitness.

In this video I use a map that Jeff actually made for his journey, I couldn't find anything else like it on the internet. Thanks Jeff for being such an inspiration. His film is better than this one, there's a link to in at the bottom of this description to watch his. I had to give it my shot, it might be the one and only time I'm ever there.

In total this journey is 32 miles, with about 8,700 ft of elevation gain. It took us about 12.5 hours, and we ended around 9pm. Cristal has been in the canyon before, she's used to the heat, and she did much better throughout the day than I did. No matter how many times people warn you about the pain on the way out, it's hard to grasp until it's happening to you. This kicked my ass, but it also provided a good foundation for the races I did the rest of the year.
