"Ondas do mar de Vigo" is a friend song, belonging to the Galician-Portuguese lyrical tradition, composed by the minstrel Martim Codax. It is the first of seven friend songs, which most commentators believe to constitute a unitary cycle. In this first song, the maiden wishes to be reunited with her beloved who is far away, probably in the service of the king, and in view of his prolonged absence, she dramatically asks the sea waves, brought from afar by the wind, about her friend's whereabouts and his return, revealing her suffering and anguish over the separation. In fact, the sea waves are a mirror of the maiden's inner world, increasingly agitated by the worry of her friend's delay as well as her deep longing and yearning for him.
The sea is an essential element in the construction of the scene. In addition, the waves are the confidant to whom the young woman turns, expressing her feelings and emotions. In particular, the waves at Vigo, which was just a small town in the Galician region of Rías Baixas during the medieval period. It should be noted that at the time, long journeys were usually made by sea, which is why the appeal is therefore aimed at the sea. It should also be noted that the minstrel calls "sea" to what is now known as a "river" or "bay". As for the refrain, due to its repetitive nature, it emphasises the aforementioned maiden's state of mind. In this context, we must emphasise the semantic value of the interjection "ai Deus" (oh God), which is a type of outburst and a direct appeal to God for her beloved to return soon and safely. On the other hand, it also has an unequivocal documentary value, as it reflects the highly religious atmosphere of the era, and suggests the oral transmission of the songs, hence its repetitive nature.
Lastly, we can say that this song belongs to the subgenre of the marinha or barcarola. Native to the western part of the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Galicia), this subgenre documents the natural tendency and way of life of a people raised by the sea. They also reflect the historical need for coastal defence in the fight against the Moors. Their simplicity, on the other hand, expresses the true popular roots and emotional spontaneity of these maidens towards their lover or friend.

«Ondas do mar de Vigo» é uma cantiga de amigo, pertencente à tradição lírica galaico-portuguesa, composta pelo jogral Martim Codax. Trata-se da primeira de sete cantigas de amigo, que a maior parte dos comentadores julga constituir um ciclo unitário. Nesta primeira canção, a donzela deseja se reencontrar com o seu amado que está longe, provavelmente ao serviço do rei, e perante a prolongada ausência, interpela dramaticamente as ondas do mar trazidas de longe pelo vento, sobre o paradeiro do seu amigo e o seu regresso, revelando o seu sofrimento e angústia pela separação. De facto, as ondas do mar são um espelho do mundo interior da donzela, cada vez mais agitado pela preocupação da demora do amigo e pela grande ânsia e saudade deste.
O mar é um elemento essencial na construção do cenário. Para além disso, as ondas constituem o confidente a quem a jovem se dirige, expressando os seus sentimentos e emoções. Em particular, às ondas de Vigo, que era apenas uma pequena povoação nas Rías Baixas galegas, durante a época medieval. É de salientar, que para a época, as viagens longas eram geralmente feitas por via marítima, sendo o apelo por isso dirigido ao mar. Há que também ter em conta, que o trovador designa por "mar" aquilo que atualmente se chama de "rio", ou "baía". Quanto ao refrão, pelo seu caráter repetitivo, realça assim o estado de espírito da donzela supramencionado. Neste contexto, há que destacar o valor semântico da locução interjetiva “ai Deus”, que constitui uma espécie de desabafo e de interpelação direta de Deus no sentido de que o amigo regresse rapidamente e bem. Por outro lado, também possui um valor documental inequívoco, pois reflete o clima de grande religiosidade da época e sugere a transmissão oral das cantigas, daí a sua natureza repetitiva.
Por último, é possível afirmar que esta cantiga pertence ao subgénero da marinha ou barcarola. Autóctone da parte ocidental da Península Ibérica (Portugal e Galiza), este subgénero documenta a tendência natural, e o modo de vida de um povo criado à beira-mar. Refletem também a necessidade histórica de defesa costeira na luta contra os mouros. Já a sua simplicidade, expressa a verdadeira origem popular e espontaneidade emotiva destas donzelas, em relação ao amado ou amigo.
