Berlin is an epicentre of European history and culture: capital of the Prussian Empire, German Empire, Weimar Republic and Third Reich, and, since 1990 the city has relished its role as the capital of a unified and re-energised Germany.

A constant throughout all these periods is the way major sites – from the Berliner Dom, Unter den Linden, the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag – have been tangible reminders of German history and its memorialisation.

In this virtual walking tour, Berlin local Thomas Abbott takes us on a stroll from the recently restored Berlin Palace on Museum Island to Unter den Linden and Parisier Platz, through the Brandenburg Gate and onto the Reichstag. Along the way, Thomas uncovers the seismic changes the city has experienced, and the ways in which it continues to remember them.
