King Lear, the aging monarch of Britain, decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, based on their declarations of love for him. While Goneril and Regan flatter him with insincere praise, Cordelia, his youngest and favorite daughter, refuses to exaggerate her feelings, stating she has no words to describe her love. Enraged, Lear disowns her, and she leaves to marry the king of France without her father’s blessing. Lear soon discovers the folly of his decision, as Goneril and Regan betray him and strip him of power, driving him to madness. Accompanied by his Fool and the disguised nobleman Kent, Lear wanders the stormy heath, grappling with his daughters' treachery and his own deteriorating state.
Parallel to Lear’s tragedy, Gloucester, a nobleman, is deceived by his illegitimate son, Edmund, into believing that his loyal son, Edgar, seeks to kill him. Forced into exile, Edgar disguises himself as a beggar, while Gloucester is blinded by Regan and her husband for aiding Lear. In Dover, Cordelia leads a French invasion to rescue her father, but the effort fails, and both Lear and Cordelia are captured. The ensuing chaos sees Edmund dueling Edgar, Goneril poisoning Regan out of jealousy over Edmund, and Cordelia being executed. Lear dies of grief after her death, leaving the kingdom in the hands of Albany, Edgar, and Kent, who are left to rule amidst the sorrow and devastation caused by betrayal and tragedy.
