When it comes to individuals filing their personal income tax returns in the United States, the standard deadline is found at section 6072 of the Internal Revenue Code, which specifies that personal income tax returns are to be filed with the Internal Revenue Service by 15th day of the 4th month of the year. However, when we pull up the calendar for 2023, one will see that April 15, 2023 falls on a Saturday. So what exactly does that mean? Well, we need to go back to the Internal Revenue Code and look at section 7503, which precludes the tax filing deadline from falling on a weekend or holiday. As such, we cannot have the personal income tax filing deadline on Saturday, April 15, 2023 or Sunday, April 16, 2023; nor can we have it on Monday, April 17, 2023, as this is Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia, such that the entire country needs to be equitable and not have the personal income tax filing deadline fall on this holiday, even if it is limited to the District of Columbia. As such, the US personal income tax filing deadline for the 2023 calendar year is set at April 18, 2023, giving taxpayers an additional three days to file their 1040 personal income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service.
