An external monitor is absolutely critical for all but the most casual of hobbyists. If you shoot video, especially using anything even a little specialized, like manual focus lenses, or false colors and exposure tools, and ESPECIALLY if you’re a solo content creator! But which kind do you get, what’s even the difference?? Today we look at four basic styles or categories most monitors will fall into. (The only one I left out is a laptop tether, but I don’t think I count that as a dedicated monitor…)

We’re not comparing and contrasting new models, and nobody’s sponsoring sh*t. All of today’s monitors are literally one of the least expensive, if not the least expensive, in their category. But the point is, they are all completely separate and discrete types of monitoring apparatus; and in certain scenarios, I can’t substitute one for another. That’s how different, and essential, they all are. One of these doesn’t even use electricity!
