Story Of Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga Temple - Twelve Jyotirlinga Of Shiva

Kashi Vishwanath is supposed to be the 1st Jyotirling that manifested breaking through the earth and flared to the skies, in doing so establishing his supremacy over all other gods. This temple has a Shakti Peeta along with the Jyotirling.

Shiva in this temple is also known as Vishwanath meaning Ruler of the universe. There is a story in Shiv Mahapurana mentions about the origin of this Jyotirlinga. Once Brahma The god of creation and Vishnu The God of Preservation, debate over their supremacy. To test them, Shiva pierced the three worlds as a huge endless pillar of light, the jyotirlinga. To determine who was mightier Vishnu took the form of a boar and sought out the bottom while Brahma took the form of a swan to fly to the pillar's top. After prolonged period of trying to find the end of the pillar, Brahma out of arrogance lied and said that he had found the end offering a katuki flower as witness, while Vishnu, honestly said that he could not find the end of it and accepted his defeat. Shiva then took the form of the wrathful Bhairava, cut off Brahma's lying fifth head, and cursed Brahma that he would not be worshipped. Vishnu for his honesty would be worshiped as equal to Shiva with his own temples for all eternity.
